This is the update to Jude's previous article.

Jude Skurray has kindly sent us this biography of Edward Stirling, son of Archibald Stirling of Keir.

Edward Stirling 1805-1873

NOTE: New information on this family has been found. It will be posted shortly.

Clan Stirling Online!  We have recieved this email and update from Ms. Skurray ...

I am the gt, gt, gt granddaughter of Edward Stirling, the eldest son of William Stirling (2nd son of John Stirling of Kippendavie 26th June 1787

Edward Stirling was born on the Stirling estate of "Content" in 1804/5.  When he died 2/2/1873 in London, he was 68 years old,  we have no definite birthday.  There is a possibility his mother was called "Jeanne" and also that she may have been known as Williams' common law wife, but we have no proof.  She was thought to be half French and half Creole, we have no record of her, or what happened to her when William married Elizabeth Barrett of "Cinnamon Hill" estate, Jamaica. Edward was educated at John Bowman school, St Vigeans', Scotland along with his younger cousin Charles (son of William's brother John).  Edward and Charles reached South Australia on 18th June 1839.

Edward married Harriett Taylor, of Ryelands Herefordshire, and they had eight children, their eldest being Sir Edward Charles Stirling (see bio. By Anna Pope). Information from the period in Jamaica is difficult to obtain and anything relating to the Stirling estates at that time, specifically Edwards' mother, would be very interesting to us

Anyway enough of that, thought you might be interested in these websites, they mention the Stirlings in Jamaica

19 March 2001, Australia - If you've never been to Australia it's one of the must-visit-at-least-once-in your life locations.

Our Stirling family has many family members located in Australia. Thanks to a recent inquiry a new section devoted to our Australian cousins has been setup by webmaster Rick Stirling.

Stirling family members have been involved in government and management in Australia for many years. In the 1820's the first governor of Western Australia and settler of Perth was Captain James Stirling.

Today Syd Stirling is a government Minister in the Northern Territory (Darwin) but was born in Kyneton, Victoria. Syd's father was James Stirling (1906-1963) and was also born in Kyneton, Victoria. Syd's grand father was William Hockin Stirling, (1869-1951) and was born in New Malden, Surrey, England. William Hockin left England on 1st August, 1900 and arrived in Melbourne, Victorian on 12th September, 1900. He settled at East Kyneton, Victoria on 19th September, 1900. Syd's great grandfather was Rev'd Charles Stirling (1827 - 1922) and was born in Dartmouth, Devon, England.

A notable Stirling related to Syd Stirling's line is Waite Hockin Stirling (1829 - 1923) who was a bishop on the Falkland Islands. He was the younger brother of Rev Charles Stirling.

So open the floodgates, the Australia section is ready to go. We'll have an in depth look at Captian James Stirling soon.

Cheers,
