Editors Note: The Stirlings of Fairburn claim to be MacGregors who, under the protection of Clan Stirling, took the Stirling name during the proscription and kept the Stirling name when the proscription was lifted. The Lord Lyon of Scotland has recognized this ancestry by granting arms with the MacGregor charges surmounted by the differenced Stirling bend and buckles.

HRH The Princess MargaretWhile researching the Scottish origins of HRH The Princess Margaret, sister of The Queen of England, I stumbled across this curious bit of genealogy. Princess Margaret's mother The "Queen Mum"  is the 8th great-granddaugther of Richard Bernard and Anna Cordray (Corderoy) of England. Richard's sister Mary is the 5th great-grandmother of Elizabeth Tewksbury wife of James William Sterling. James William is the son of Thomas Stirling and Mehitable Norton and grandson of James Stirling and Hannah May of Cornwall, CT.

Princess Margaret died on the 9th of February, 2002.

Descendants of Archibald Stirling of Kippendavie (pdf file)

Descendant Catherine Stirling Gould originally provided this information to Clan Stirling in February 2001. Our apologies for taking so long to get it published!

Thanks to the special efforts of our webmaster Rick Stirling, it is now much easier to provide reports like these to the website. Please feel free to submit information, ancestries or anything else you feel will be of interest.

Some of John Stirling's descendants immigrated to Ontario, Canada. It's a very interesting history.

[Barry Parish]

"A parish in the county of Forfar, extending four miles in length, and 3 miles in breadth, along the north coast of the Frith of Tay. A bank running from east to west divides the parish into a higher and lower division, which are very different in soil and appearance; while on the low ground of the banks of the river is sandy, and affording only a scanty pasture to a few flocks of sheep, the higher is a rich loam, extremely fertile and well cultivated. The chief manufacture is brown linen; and the parish has long been famed for the excellence of the fabric, and the superiority of the workmanship; the greatest part is stamped and sold at the Arbroath market. Two lighthouses are erected on the side of the river, to guide the mariner safely through the sand banks, which are very numerous at the mouth of the Tay." (The Gazetteer of Scotland, W Chalmers, Dundee 1803)
