Family Posts - United  States

Editor's Note: I received this information from Dennis over 2 years ago but it somehow slipped by me during a move when my computer was down for several weeks. My sincere apology to Dennis for this oversight.

I am a family genealogist and worked on my Sterling line a few years ago; I am descended from John Sterling of Accomac/Northhampton Counties, VA. I'm planning a trip to Scotland this year and thought I would see if I can get my ancestors from Stock, Essex, ENG to Scotland. I have attached the work done by me and others. The descendent tree I have attached only includes the generations that have no living members. My most recent Sterling ancestor on the tree is Effie Wingate Sterling; I have attached a picture of her in Chrisfield, MD.

I am from Maryland but have lived in Texas for many years.

You can use any of the attached info as you wish.

Newberry, South Carolina Descendants of John Stirling & Rebecca Pitts

Descendants of John Stirling & Rebecca Pitts of Newberry, South Carolina data have been added to the family pages section.

It is believed John Stirling arrived in Newberry from Ireland around the late 1700's. He arrived with four brothers named James, Harry, Seth, and Ephraim. The date of his arrival has not yet been determined.

From the 1790 census records it appears there was only one Stirling in South Carolina, Ishom Stirling in Camden District, Lancaster County. In his house hold were himself, another male under 16, and two females ages not given.

It appears that John Stirling & Rebecca and his family arrived after 1790.

It is also not known at this time where he arrived from, but family lore, and early acquaintances say he came from Ireland, and spoke with a distinct Irish brogue. His grandson Hosea reported he came from Ireland.

This information was contributed by Doyle Chambers. If you are part of this line of Clan Stirling, please contact him, he'll enjoy hearing from you. If you have more information on this branch of the Stirling family please let us know.

Alexander Stirling was christened on July 7, 1751 in Kennettles, Angus, Scotland.

He was born in 1753 in Lethan, near Forfar, Angusshire, Scotland. He served in the military in 1773 in Manchac and Baton Rouge, West Florida. He signed a will on January 5, 1808 in Alexanders Creek, 3rd District of West Feliciana, Louisiana.

Stirling Estate in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana"In the name of God, Amen. I, Alexander Stirling, native of Farfar, Angushire, North Britain, now of Alexander's Creek, in the third district of West Feliciana, providence of Louisisana, planter, being at present in good health, and of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make and desire this to be my last will and testament."

Alexander married Ann Alston in 1784.  Alexander and Ann have a very large posterity, who still gather at the family estate every few years.  The family settled in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and the estate house is still standing today.

A wonderful book was recently published about Alexander Stirling and Ann Alston's family.  There is new information coming in all the time on this very important branch of the Stirling family.  If you have additional information you'd like to share, please email or call us!

Robert lived in Blount County, Tennessee. It is suspected that Joanna S. Hugh Sterling of Conway, New Hampshire

Hugh Sterling, undoubtedly a Scots or Scots-Irish emigrant to America, appears first at Manchester, New Hampshire, where under date of July 7, 1753, we find his name attached to a petition to the Governors of the Colony. Oct. 31, 1765, he received a Royal Grant of land lying in the now town of Conway, Carroll County, and settled there.

There is no will on record for Hugh in New Hampshire, perhaps he emigrated to another part of the New World. If you tie into this branch of Clan Stirling, please let us know.

John Gilman Sterling, the son of William Penn Sterling, and great-grandfather of website founder Michael L. Jex kept a small journal for about 10 months in 1899.  The journal records the first year of life for his eldest daughter Morna Avis Sterling, and records the death of John's Mother Caroline on 14 Nov 1899.  The journal was kept safe all these years in a box of photos and Family Group Sheets gathered by his daughter,  Morna Avis Sterling Painter.  The journal was located in May 1999 at the home of Beverly Ann Painter Jex, John Gilman Sterling's granddaughter.

The journal is handwritten in ink, in a small American Diary 1899.  The cover is leather, a dark maroon.  Inside, John kept notes on each day, his purchases, and many facts about the printing business and newspaper he ran in Tripoli, Iowa.  He was also interested in the weather, recording many days the temperture for the day.  If the temperture was above zero, he made a line "----" below the number.  If it was below zero, he recorded the number with a "----" above the number.

John kept careful track of his income in the back section of the journal. In January 1899 he made $22.25, expenses were $21.70. From this list of income and expenses, we can see that John Gilman loved eating oysters. He ate them serval times a week, sometimes every single day for several weeks running.  John stopped recording his expenses after this time, about the time his mother, Caroline C. Robinson fell ill.

This first installment is for the period of Jan 1-15 1899.  Other installments will come every few days for the next several weeks.

Joseph Starling was born in 1721 at Little Compton, Rhode Island.  He later moved to Windham, Maine.  This information was kindly provided to Clan Stirling by Scott Steitz, one of Joesph's descendants.  If you have more to add to this branch of the family you can contact Scott at ssteitz @ hotmail dot com

Scott provided some additional information in his email - "My Uncle Leon Sterling and a distant Cousin, John Sterling, have hit a wall on Joseph's ancestory.  The most concrete record found to date shows his marriage to Mary Wooster in Falmouth (now Portland) Maine in 1743.  This record shows Joseph to be from Little Compton, which is now in Rhode Island. Although Josephs name is given as Starling, he is believed to be Scottish.  John Sterling has reviewed records in which Joseph corresponded to the Presbyterian church to add a new parish.

The last name was changed to Sterling by Josephs grandchildren while that part of the family lived on Monhegan Island.  Joseph's date of birth is estimated to be aprox 1721.

Hopefully someone may have information that will help us establish the ancestory of Joseph Starling (as well as the correct spelling of the surname)."
