Rick Sterling – CSO Web Master

Dr. William Archibald Stirling, was a surgeon in the Royal Navy who settled at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, in the early 1800s.  He was possibly the first Stirling to reside permanently in Newfoundland, although Dr. John Stirling, who is believed to be his brother, also resided in Harbour Grace, at approximately the same time.  Very little is known about Dr. William Archibald Stirling’s origins.  He was born in 1786, and because he was a founding member of the Conception Bay Benevolent Irish Society, it is believed that he was of Irish blood lines.  On August 17, 1812, he married Emma Mayne, the daughter of Dr. John Mayne, and they raised a large family of ten (10) sons and one (1) daughter.

In addition to conducting a successful medical practice, Dr. Stirling was a prominent member of Harbour Grace society and played an active role in many community endeavors.  He served as a Magistrate for the Northern District, medical attendant at the Goal, on the Board of Road Commissioners of Harbour Grace, as Chairman for the Board of Commissioners for the Harbour Grace Grammar School, as Chairman for the Committee to rebuild the Anglican Church at Harbour Grace after fire of 1816, on the Protestant Board of Education Harbour Grace,  as Commissioner of Grammar School Harbour Grace, and in many other capacities.  He was a very colourful figure and there are many documented court cases involving him, for recovery of medical bills and other matters.

Due to failing eyesight, Dr. Stirling was forced to end his medical practice at Harbour Grace and move to Twillingate, where he and Emma lived with their son, Dr. William McCleery Carrington Stirling.  As a result, in 1853, his properties at Harbour Grace were offered for sale.

On August 12, 1858, Dr. William Archibald Stirling died at his son’s residence in Twillingate, and was buried in the St. Peter’s Churchyard Cemetery, where his headstone is still visible today.  His wife Emma died July 19, 1863, also at her son’s residence in Twillingate.
